Devuan Beowulf 3.1.0 Released: A GNU+Linux Debian Without Systemd

Devuan Beowulf 3.1.0 Released: A GNU+Linux Debian Without Systemd

Superseding the previous version 3.0.0, the Devuan GNU+Linux team has released a new point version 3.1.0, which is the second snapshot of its Devuan 3 Beowulf series, based on Debian Buster.

As you may know, Devuan GNU+Linux operating system is an alternative to Debian GNU/Linux for those who want a Systemd-free distribution.

What’s New In Devuan Beowulf 3.1.0?

The most interesting update in Devuan GNU+Linux 3.1.0 is the addition of a new init system, Runit.

So, in total, the installer now provides three init system options at install time: OpenRC, SysV init, and Runit.

Along with multiple init system choices, the installer also now lets you install an alternative bootloader (lilo) in place of GRUB.

Moreover, v3.1.0 has altered the behaviour of su utility. You can now use su - command to get root’s path or use the full path to commands if you use only su.

However, if you want the old behaviour of su utility, add below line to /etc/default/su file.

ALWAYS_SET_PATH yes

Among the bug fixes, it has changed the ID of the operating system that showed “Debian” in the boot menu instead of “Devuan” in the last release.

For more detailed information, you can read the release note of Devuan 3 Beowulf from here.

How To Get Devuan 3.1.0?

If you want to try this Debian OS free of Systemd init system, grab its installer ISOs, desktop-live, and minimal-live ISOs from here available for i386, amd64, armel, armhf, arm64 and ppc64el platforms.

However, if you’re already using Devuan 2.0 ASCII, you can upgrade to Devuan 3 by following the instructions given here.

Or, if you’re already using Beowulf, you only need to run this command to get to the
current release version:

apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade
