Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Will Soon Get an Important Unity Stack Update with 27 Bug Fixes

Canonical Software Engineer for Unity Marco Trevisan reports today on an upcoming update for the Unity Stack on the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system.

When Mark Shuttleworth said Canonical wouldn't develop Unity anymore, there were rumors that Unity 7 will also no longer receive any maintenance work. But Canonical shattered those rumors and said it would continue to patch things in the Unity Stack for supported releases, such as Ubuntu 16.04 LTS.

Truth be told, we didn't actually see any signs of life support for Unity since that announcement, but it looks like the team responsible for keeping the desktop environment bug-free has done some great work lately and managed to squash no less than 27 bugs for the Unity Stack in Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus).

MAME, the open-source and cross-platform computer emulator software, has been updated this week to version 0.192, a release that incorporates support for new systems and games.

Flatpak Linux App Sandboxing Now Supports Stateless Systems, Native GTK+ Themes

The Flatpak 0.10 stable branch of the open-source universal binary format for GNU/Linux distributions has been updated recently to first point release.

Flatpak 0.10.1 is now the latest version of the Linux application sandboxing and distribution framework (formerly XDG-App), adding new commands to display information about applications in a remote (flatpak remote-info) and to allow you to search the appstream data from the command-line (flatpak search).

I have been watching the progress with Solus Linux from afar for some time now. I’ve even had other Freedom Penguin contributors share their thoughts on Solus. So when I decided to give everyone my review, I wanted to make sure I cover the basics…then move on to the stuff I cared about – using it as a daily driver.

Solus is not based on any other distro. It’s a Linux unto itself and this article shares my experience with it.

Solus Review – The installation

Honestly, installing any modern Linux distro is incredibly uneventful and boring. This isn’t a bad thing, rather a point of fact we need to remember when we read about or watch someone doing a Linux review. With that bit of unpleasantness out of the way, there are some cool items of note with the Solus installation I’d like to point out.

The user security policy for Solus is great. Some distros will allow you to utilize terrible passwords limited to under five characters. Solus puts its foot down on this practice and requires the passwords be longer than some newbies might be inclined to run with.

Because of this, I ended up going with a seven character password that Solus allowed without any further delay.

Long-time Ubuntu member Dale Beaudoin ran a poll last week on the official Ubuntu forums to take the pulse of the community and see if they are interested in an Ubuntu Unity Remix that would be released alongside Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Bionic Beaver) next year and be supported for nine months or five years.

Fedora 25 to Reach End of Life on December 12, 2017, Upgrade to Fedora 27 Now

The Fedora 25 Linux operating system is going to reach end of life (EOL) in two weeks, so the Fedora Project urges all users to upgrade to a newer release.

Released last year on November 22, Fedora 25 was the first ever release of the Red Hat-sponsored GNU/Linux distribution to ship with the next-generation Wayland display server by default for the Workstation edition, which uses the GNOME desktop environment. Fedora 25 was also one of the first distros to make this major move.

Like any other Fedora release, Fedora 25 received thirteen months of support, during various of the included components received updates to newer versions as they were pushed upstream. But, as all good things must come to an end, beginning December 12, 2017, the Fedora Project will no longer support Fedora 25.

Q4OS Linux Loves Windows: Q4OS for Windows 10 Installer Now Officially Available

Softpedia has just been informed by the Q4OS team about the general availability of their brand-new Q4OS for Windows 10 installer that lets you install the Linux distro alongside Windows.

Q4OS is a Debian-based GNU/Linux distribution created with the ex-Windows user in mind. It uses the Trinity Desktop Environment (TDE) by default to make the Windows to Linux migration easier, and there's now an official installer to help newcomers install Q4OS alongside their Windows 10 installations on the same computer.

Easily Upgrade Ubuntu to a Newer Version with This Single Command

zzupdate is an open source command line utility that makes the task of upgrading Ubuntu Desktop and Server to newer versions a tad bit easier by combining several update commands into one single command.

Upgrading an Ubuntu system to a newer release is not a herculean task. Either with the GUI or with a couple of commands, you can easily upgrade your system to the latest release.

On the other hand, zzupdate written by Gianluigi ‘Zane’ Zanettini handles clean, update, autoremove, version upgrade and composer self-update for your Ubuntu system with just a single command.

It cleans up the local cache, updates available package information, and then perform a distribution upgrade. In the next step, it updates the Composer and removes the unused packages.

The script must run as root user.

Installing zzupdate to upgrade Ubuntu to a newer version

To install zzupdate, execute the below command in a Terminal.

curl -s http://ift.tt/2jqPLYx | sudo sh

And then copy the provided sample configuration file to zzupdate.conf and set your preferences.

sudo cp /usr/local/http://ift.tt/2x3EEtz /etc/http://ift.tt/2jqPOnb

Once you have everything, just use the following command and it will start upgrading your Ubuntu system to a newer version (if there is any).

sudo zzupdate

Note that zzupdate upgrades the system to the next available version in case of a normal release. However, when you are running Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, it tries to search for the next long-term support version only and not the latest version available.

If you want to move out of the LTS release and upgrade to the latest release, you will have change some options.

For Ubuntu desktop, open Software & Updates and under Updates tab and change Notify me of a new Ubuntu version to “For any new version“.

For Ubuntu server, edit the release-upgrades file.

vi /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades

Prompt=normal

Configuring zzupdate [optional]

zzupdate options to configure

REBOOT=1

If this value is 1, a system restart is performed after an upgrade.

REBOOT_TIMEOUT=15

This sets up the reboot timeout to 900 seconds as some hardware takes much longer to reboot than others.

VERSION_UPGRADE=1

Executes version progression if an upgrade is available.

VERSION_UPGRADE_SILENT=0

Version progression occurs automatically.

COMPOSER_UPGRADE=1

Value ‘1’ will automatically upgrade the composer.

SWITCH_PROMPT_TO_NORMAL=0

This features switches the Ubuntu Version updated to normal i.e. if you have an LTS release running, zzupdate won’t upgrade it to Ubuntu 17.10 if its set to 0. It will search for an LTS version only. In contrast, value 1 searches for the latest release whether you are running an LTS or a normal release.

Once done, all you have to do is run in console to run a complete update of your Ubuntu system

sudo zzupdate

Final Words

Though the upgrade process for Ubuntu is in itself an easy one, zzupdate reduces it to mere one command. No coding knowledge is necessary and the process is complete config file driven. I personally found itself a good tool to update several Ubuntu systems without the need of taking care of different things separately.
