PinePhone’s $50 Psion-like Keyboard Now In Final Stages For Early 2021 Release

In the October community update, Pine64 announced to bring its official add-ons like a physical keyboard and wireless charging to its Linux-based smartphone PinePhone.

Now, in the latest community update, Pine64 has confirmed that it has finalized the keyboard design, which will be submitted to the keyboard vendor for production on December 20. Subsequently, the preview units are expected to be available in January 2021.

The early production units will be shipped out to developers to enable it across the PinePhone supported OSes. And if the enablement goes well, the PinePhone keyboard will also land in the Pine Store and regional stores for the public to buy it in late February or early March 2021.

Pine64 has also revealed that PinePhone keyboard will cost around $50 USD.

Speaking of design, instead of Nokia N900-style, it will now have Psion series-5 PDA-like ‘Vulcano’ key type keyboard attached with PinePhone via the pogo pins.

The keyboard will also have a high-capacity 5000mAh or 6000mAh battery, which will help to counter screen weight and use it like a mini-laptop.

Coming to another add-on, a Qi wireless charging case has also gone under production and will available before March 2021. However, its price is still yet to be decided.

Furthermore, on the software side, PinePhone-specific camera application Megapixels has received a new version update. It now offers more features such as autofocus, manual controls for exposure and shutter, back and front camera switching, and a smooth 30FPS viewfinder.

Though Megapixels app is developed by and for postmarketOS, you can also use it on other PinePhone supported Linux-based operating systems as well such as Mobian, Manjaro, and KDE Neon.
