Evidence has been found in the latest macOS Big Sur beta that Apple is planning to bring FaceID to Mac devices. A code snippet has hinted that soon we could see the secure face unlock option in Macs.
When Apple introduced FaceID biometric authentication technology in iPhone X, a code snippet with the project’s internal name as “PearlCamera” was found in the iOS update and now developers have found references to “PearlCamera” in macOS Big Sur Developer Beta 3.
According to 9to5 Mac, the beta version of the macOS has also revealed codes like “FaceDetect” and “BioCapture” indicating that Apple is working on introducing biometric face unlock option in MacBooks.
However, the project is in its early stage of implementation and Apple might take some time before adding FaceID in MacBooks.
With FaceID, MacBooks would further improve in terms of security and it will also become convenient for users to unlock their device.
One of the best implementations could be seen in iMac as MacBook Air and MacBook Pro already have TouchID biometric authentication system integrated into the in-built keyboard. Since iMacs don’t have in-built keyboards, FaceID would bring the best out of it.
One of the major steps towards introducing FaceID in MacBooks would be adding Neural engine as it is one of the main components for analysing face data. Recently, Apple has announced that it is dropping Intel chips in favor of its home-made chipsets.
Apple’s first MacBook with Apple Silicon will arrive later this year and it could include FaceID as per the current speculations.
