Grml 2020.06 Released: A Debian-based Live Linux System For Sysadmin

Grml is a Debian GNU/Linux-based bootable live operating system, especially for system administrators. After a hiatus of around two years, Michael Prokop, Grml lead developer, has finally released a new version — Grml 2020.06 ‘Ausgehfuahangl.’

The latest version 2020.06 is based on the testing branch of Debian 11 ‘bullseye.’ Subsequently, the live system now uses Debian linux-image packages in place of its own custom Grml kernel. Grml 2020.06 has also removed 22 packages and included 30 fresh software packages from Debian testing as of June 24, 2020.

Among the key new packages that Grml has included are avahi-utils, borgbackup, cloud-init, iperf3, qemu-system-gui, qrencode, mate, zstd and wireguard. Here is a detailed list of Debian packages shipped in Grml 2020.06.

Grml has also updated several core packages to its new versions. For instance, ash to dash, fuse to fuse3, vim-gtk to vim-gtk3, ruby2.5 to ruby2.7, and python3.7 to python3.8.

Since Python2 reached its end-of-life on January 1, 2020, Grml 2020.06 now no longer supports Python2 in its tools. Additionally, it has now ported its tools like grml2usb, grml-paste and grml-x from Python2 to Python3.

If you use the latest grml-full 2020.06 edition, you can have cloud-init support for cross-platform cloud instance initialization. The new cloud-init packages can now identify the cloud it is running on and read any given metadata from the cloud and initialize the system accordingly.

You can use it for several purposes such as setting network configuration, SSH access key, and hostname. If you want to enable it on Grml, boot it with the boot option services=cloud-init. For static network configuration, you need to boot Grml with boot options nonetworking services=cloud-init,networking.

Another major change in Grml live system is the new default mount point. With v2020.06, the system has switched the default mount point from /lib/live/mount/medium to /run/live/medium.
