NomadBSD 1.4-RC1 Released; Based On FreeBSD 12.2-p2

After the current stable NomadBSD 1.3.2, which was released last year, NomadBSD development team is now preparing for the next version, NomadBSD 1.4.

Subsequently, the first release candidate for version 1.4 is now made available for testing for both x86_64 and i386 architectures.

For those unaware, NomadBSD is a FreeBSD-based persistent live system for USB flash drives.

Combining automatic hardware detection and setup, you can also configure to use it as a desktop system for various purposes such as data recovery, educational, or test FreeBSD’s hardware compatibility.

Speaking of new changes, NomadBSD 1.4 snapshot has upgraded its base system from earlier FreeBSD 12.1 to the latest stable FreeBSD 12.2.

Additionally, it has improved the installer by fixing the UEFI boot problem and making suitable graphics card driver already installed and setup.

If the system could not find better graphics driver, it will now use VESA or SCFB graphics driver.

Furthermore, NomadBSD 1.4 has also improved Touchpad support by adding DSBXinput tool that allows easy configuration of touchpads and mice.

Another interesting update in version 1.4 is the addition of GUI for easy installation of Linux Chrome and Brave browser.

You can install these browsers, which allow you to use popular streaming services like Netflix, Prime Video, and Spotify.

Among other enhancements, this is what NomadBSD 1.4 includes:

• Added rc-script for saving and restoring the display brightness
• Added support for selecting other window managers or desktop environments by pressing in the graphical login manager (SLiM)
• Replaced wifimgr (Wi-Fi Network Manager) with NetworkMgr (Network Manager)
• The partition using the remaining space now mounts under /data
• Removed i386 support for accelerated graphics for Intel and ATI/AMD cards
