Microsoft’s App Compatibility Service Now Supports Windows 10 Snapdragon PCs

One of the biggest questions when switching to a PC running Windows 10 ARM is, will my apps run on it? Well, Microsoft and Qualcomm are working hard to find the answer to it.

At Ignite 2020, the companies have announced the App Assure with FastTrack program for Windows 10 ARM-powered Snapdragon devices to fix app compatibility issues. The service is already available for regular Windows 10 devices, but now it has been extended for devices running the new architecture.

App Assure primarily caters to business users who depend on legacy apps for their operations. With the constant shift in technology, legacy apps are sometimes rendered incompatible on newer devices.

That’s the reason some businesses may be reluctant when switching from Windows 7 to Windows 10. And the situation is even more challenging in the case of ARM-powered Windows devices.

As part of the program, Microsoft steps in and tries to make the apps compatible with the ARM architecture, while working with customers, app developers, and software vendors.

Microsoft ensures that the desired apps that were compatible with “Windows 7, Office 2010, or later versions work on Windows 10 and Microsoft 365 Apps on ARM64 devices.” The service will be offered to App Assure subscribers at no additional cost.

However, if an app requires a driver that’s incompatible with ARM or it’s only available in a 64-bit version, then Microsoft may not be able to provide much help.

Qualcomm is betting big on its Snapdragon-powered PCs marketed as “Always-On, Always Connected PCs” to the masses. While these devices can provide seamless mobile connectivity and an all-day battery, app incompatibility could turn out to be a big roadblock and might divert customers elsewhere.
