Microsoft has kick-started the Ignite 2020 in the form of a virtual event. One of the biggest announcements from the event is about the Edge Chromium browser for Linux.
The company said that the first Microsoft Edge for Linux preview would arrive in October. It will be available for download on the Edge Insider website via Dev Channel. It will also be available via the packager manager of the respective Linux distributions.
As you might already, know the new Edge browser is powered by Chromium and meant to wipe the dirt spread by its older siblings. Edge Chromium is already available for Windows 10, Windows 7/8, Android, iOS, and macOS devices.
Microsoft first expressed its desire to bring Edge to Linux back in 2019. The company even teased Linux-version of the web browser at this year’s BUILD 2020 conference.
In terms of features and user experience, Edge for Linux is expected to be the same as on other platforms. However, Microsoft may be working on developer-focused improvements for the Linux version of Edge and in general. Last year, it even conducted a survey asking devs what they want from a web browser.
As of now, there is no word on when the stable release of Edge Chromium will arrive on Linux machines. Till then, you can try out the developer preview, which will be live in a few weeks.
