Following the TikTok app ban in India, lawmakers in Japan are also looking forward to banning the video-sharing platform. Earlier, U.S. officials raised concerns over data practices followed by TikTok’s parent owner ByteDance. Japanese lawmakers appear to have similar privacy concerns, and they also don’t want China to access the data of its citizens.
As mentioned in TechCrunch, the decision to outlaw TikTok in Japan was first highlighted by Japanese national broadcaster NHK. A group of lawyers will propose a ban on TikTok in front of the Japanese government in September 2020.
TikTok has a huge following in Japan. As per the stats, TikTok has always been dubbed as the top entertaining app on the Japan iOS store and is the fifth most downloaded app in the country.
What TikTok Spokesperson said
In reply to Japan’s action, a TikTok’s spokesperson said that the company is suffering due to the misinformation prevailing in the market regarding their working. He noted that TikTok has an American CEO with ten years of experience in the US military and law enforcement.
Moreover, all the data of TikTok users is stored in the United States and Singapore. The user data is kept with uncompromising control, and only a few employees have access to it.
As of now, TikTok is already suffering a massive drop in revenue due to the India ban. India was one of the biggest markets for TikTok, and now the US is also planning to ban the app. From the looks of it, TikTok might have to reconsider its privacy policies if it wants to avoid getting banned in Japan.
