Redditor Installs macOS ‘Big Sur’ On Acer Chromebook

Apple recently released new software upgrades for its devices, including the new macOS 11 Big Sur which breathes fresh air into the user interface and also brings several new features into the Safari browser.

It hasn’t been a week and a Redditor has installed the macOS Big Sur on the Acer Chromebook. Coolstarorg posted a screenshot of the Acer C720 Chromebook running the recently released macOS 11 Big Sur.

They/them haven’t disclosed any installation guide and have recommended that it isn’t suitable for an average user. The Redditor has divulged the following details about the Chromebook running on macOS Big Sur:

CPU: Core i3-4005U
GPU: Intel HD 4400
RAM: 4 GB DDR3
Motherboard/Laptop Make and Model: Acer C720 Chromebook
Audio Codec: Realtek ALC283
Ethernet Card: N/A
Wifi/BT Card: Atheros 9462
Touchpad and touch display devices: ELAN I2C Trackpad, Atmel Touch screen
BIOS revision: coreboot/Tianocore

As posted on the Hackintosh subreddit, the Redditor says that the setup uses:

• OpenCore Bootloader with a custom coreboot firmware.
• SMC Emulated using custom coreboot firmware (no FakeSMC or VirtualSMC)
• Lilu + other kexts* installed to /Library/Extension (as no injection via OpenCore)
• Patches required for AppleALC on Big Sur
• Patches required for VoodooI2C on Big Sur

*Kexts stand for kernel extensions in macOS and work the same as drivers in Windows operating systems.

Apple has only released the first developer preview of macOS Big Sur and there are chances that this Chromebook Hackintosh might not be usable and lacks functionalities like WiFi and Bluetooth.

Nonetheless, it is impressive.
