Can you smell what Google is cooking?
Google is working on a new operating system. Well, we don’t yet know much about it, but we know one thing for sure. And that it is a non-Linux entity.
Pink plus purple equals Fuchsia. Yup, the secret’s out. Pink plus purple equals Fuchsia.
Now on to the topic, there hasn’t been an official briefing from Google, so we are in the dark as to what purpose does Fuchsia OS serve, on which devices will it be deployed, and mainly, will Fuchsia replace Android and/or Chrome OS?
But this project is open source and that just might help us speculate where Google is rowing with Fuchsia OS.
The project still lacks a graphical interface but is at an executable stage. It is hosted on Github and compile instructions along with the source code is available here.
Sayonara Linux
Google said to Linux: We need to talk. The talk.
Yup, Google has moved away from the Linux kernel in this one. Google made it big on Android and the Chrome OS which both used the Linux kernel. But Fuchsia OS uses the Magenta kernel and due to the lack of official info on Fuchsia OS, we are just left to speculate as to why Google moved away from Linux.
The Kernel
The Fuchsia OS Wikipedia page states that “Fuchsia is designed to run on a multitude of devices, including mobile phones and personal computers”. Well, at least that’s out. Looks like Fuchsia OS will replace Android and Chrome OS.
(Again, There hasn’t been an official briefing from Google.)
Here’s something interesting about the kernel i.e Magenta. It is built around the little kernel. Which is 24KB in size in some bootloaders. Wrap your head around that. So Fuchsia will be able to run on the smallest of devices including IoT, embedded devices, wearable gadgets.
Looks like Google will make the first true Universal OS.
Dart Programming Language
It’s no wonder that Google’s own programming language Dart for Fuchsia.
Dart is a multipurpose programming language. It’s used to build web apps, light apps for Internet of Things and mobile apps. This really emphasises on the idea that Fuchsia might be a universal OS after all.
Flutter Framework
Java is one of the most popular and extensively used programming languages out there. From Websites to awesome Android apps, It’s all Java. But Google recently had brought about another framework to build apps for both iOS and android using their own Flutter Framework.
Flutter is still in its infancy and it’s library is still small. But, It is efficient, faster, builds high-performance apps and above all, Cross platform.
Hint: Fuchsia will be big and everywhere.
Escher
Android Police reported that Fuchsia will be combining Escher rendering with OpenGl. Escher rendering features Volumetric soft shadows, Color bleeding, Light diffusion and Lens effect.
This will greatly improve graphics quality and looks like Google might be searching for great graphics in the Software domain whereas many are focusing in the hardware domain.
It might happen
See, A super light kernel, An efficient app framework and a Graphic rendering method equipped to handle Lens and shadow effects easily. What might we have here?
Google glass? Or a VR? Augmented Reality Gadget?
The above possibilities are highly probable. Last time Google Glass failed to make the noise we thought it would make. But now, A faster, efficient, simply better Head-mounted devices is possible with Fuchsia. And believe me, the idea has revolutionary potential if Google nails it.
App Streaming
Google has been working on web apps/app streaming for a while now. In a commercial perspective, web apps are much more rewarding to Google than rthe traditional apps. Easier to code, convenient to maintain and also great at fulfilling the ultimate financial aspect of Google, Advertisement. LTE and faster Internet has made this possible now.
Finally
In this article, We have explored a wide array of devices that Fuchsia might be deployed on. What exactly Google will do with Fuchsia? We might need to wait a bit to know this.
But one thing is for sure. It will be big and it will have an impact.
If it comes out as a universal OS running on desktop as well as mobile devices, Then, even Windows might face some serious competition.
As of desktop Linux, It will face its fair share of challenges. Fuchsia will be open source, fast, reliable (Google has its back) and most probably free too. Google, right?
Initially, I had doubts Fuchsia OS might hinder Linux’s growth. But then, Linux recently completed 25 years. 25 years of facing challenges, winning challenges and growing. Linux is built on a rock. It has a loyal user base. Awesome people contribute and make Linux better than ever. Linux will be better than ever.
We are very excited about Fuchsia OS and all the news will be covered on It’s F.O.S.S as soon as it’s out. Signup to our newsletter to get updates on this new OS.
