After NuTyX 12-rc1, its founder Tnut has finally announced the major release of a new stable version, NuTyX 20.12.0, with package manager cards 2.4.123.
As Tnut quoted while testing version release, the latest version 12 is a completely new 64-bit project, and hence no 32-bit version will be available for NuTyX 20.12.0.
For those unaware, NuTyX is a French Linux distribution (with multi-language support) built from “Linux From Scratch” and “Beyond Linux From Scratch” projects featuring its own custom package manager called “cards.”
What’s New In NuTyX 20.12.0?
Starting with the core updates, v20.12 has rebuilt its compilation chain in addition to Glibc 2.32, GCC 10.2.0 and Binutils 2.34.
Additionally, the core NuTyX now offers the Long-Term Support (LTS) kernels 4.9.248, 4.14.212, 4.19.163, 5.4.83, 5.10.0, and the latest stable version 5.9.14.
Another major enhancement that NuTyx 20.12 has brought is in the init system. As mentioned during the release candidate, NuTyX team has forked out runit init project and developed a new home-baked official initialization system called RuNyX.
With the new init system, NuTyX 20.12.0 comes with three init systems: SysV, SystemD, and RuNyX to give you a wider choice at boot time on the GRUB menu.
However, if you want, you can remove RuNyX and SystemD packages as SysV will always remain main base init.
Furthermore, the Eudev device manager is now the eudev part of the Systemd project and works well on all three inits without problems.
As Systemd comes with several modules by default, the currently available version has also disabled some core modules to keep NuTyX running and compatible, which includes:
- timed (ntp)
- networkd (dhcpcd, networkmanager)
- resolve (dhcpcd, networkmanager)
- SysV compat (sysVinit)
Among the desktop packages, NuTyX has updated supported desktop environments to the latest version available, including MATE 1.24.1, Xfce 4.14.3, and KDE Plasma 5.20.4 (with its framework 5.76.0 and application bundle 20.12.0).
Now speaking of applications, here is the list of core utilities and desktop software it ships with their updated version:
- Graphical server Xorg-server 1.20.10
- Mesa 3D Library 20.3.0
- GTK3 3.24.24 and QT 5.15.2
- Python 3.9.0 and 2.7.18
- Thunderbird 78.5.1
- Falkon 3.1.0
- Scribus 1.5.6
- LibreOffice 7.0.3.2
- GIMP 2.10.22
- Firefox 83.0
- Chromium 87.0.4280.88
- Epiphany 3.38.2
At last, if you want to try out NuTyX 20.12.0, grab the ISO image available here in various editions with BASE, JWM, Openbox, KDE, XFCE, LXDE, and MATE desktop.
Or, if you’re already using NuTyX, you can easily upgrade your system by running the command:
sudo cards upgrade
