YouTuber Compiles Windows XP From The Leaked Source Code

Last week, an anonymous hacker leaked a 43GB file on 4Chan containing the alleged source codes of several older versions of Windows OS, including Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and more.

Now, the leaked source codes’ authenticity has been confirmed as a Windows developer has managed to compile his own version of Windows XP and Server 2003 from the leaked code.

A Windows developer named “NTDEV” who also owns a Youtube channel, decided to compile the leaked source code to check whether the code is original or not. He has posted videos online, showing that the code is indeed real as he managed to compile Windows XP over the weekend and Windows Server 2003 yesterday. However, he did mention that the leaked code lacked some critical files such as Winlogon.exe, which is required to install the operating system.

Speaking to ZDNet, NTDEV said, “Certain files, such as the kernel and the Explorer can be compiled easily. I have tried some programs from the compiled source of XP, and it seems that they are identical to the retail versions of Windows.” According to NTDEV, except for the missing files, the leaked source code can be used to compile all the SKUs, as well as free (optimized) retail builds.

NTDEV said that the source code of Windows Server 2003 is more complete than the XP one. He was successful in compiling the operating system and installed it on a virtual machine without much issues.

Now that it has been assured that the leaked code is indeed authentic, Microsoft needs to acknowledge it publicly and warn users of the possible implications of the massive leak.
