Bodhi Linux 4.2.0 Released, Drops Support For 32 Bit PAE Hardware

Lightweight Linux distribution, Bodhi Linux 4.2.0 has been released, four months after the last stable release.

The latest version of Bodhi Linux is powered by Linux kernel 4.10 and comes along with Swami Control Panel installed by default.

This is an update release with the goal to keep the current ISO image up-to-date. Existing users will NOT have to reinstall this new release. They should have Bodhi Linux 4.2.0 installed already if they have been running the system update.

What’s Bodhi Linux?

Bodhi Linux desktop

Bodhi is a lightweight Linux distribution based on Ubuntu Linux. It follows the principles of Minimalism and the Moksha (a Sanskrit word that means “emancipation, liberation, or release”) desktop.

By default, only softwares that are necessary for most Linux users are included. For instance a PCManFM file browser, Midori web browser, ePad text editor, ePhoto image viewer, eepDater system updater and Terminology terminal emulator.

Bodhi Linux developers have maintained an online database made up of lightweight software that can be installed directly through its AppCenter.

New Features of Bodhi Linux 4.2.0

Bodhi Linux 4.2.0 is the first release to drop out the 32bit PAE discs (for very old 32 bit Intel Pentium). Nevertheless, this doesn’t mean it no longer supports 32bit computers. For those who still need to install the 32bit version, the Legacy ISO image is available which will work on both PAE and non-PAE 32bit hardware.

  • 64bit releases use the 4.10 kernel by default

  • Swami Control Panel is installed by default

  • 32bit PAE discs dropped

  • Legacy ISO image prepared to support 32bit computers on both PAE and non-PAE hardware

Bodhi Linux Release Trivia

Bodhi Linux comes with three different ISO images with each release – Standard, AppPack and Legacy Release.

  • Standard release was created for desktop and workstations with processors that run a 64bit operating system.
  • AppPack release features have a minimal base system that allows users to add exactly what they want.
  • Legacy is a 32bit release that utilizes the 3.2 Linux kernel that is meant for hardware older than 15 years.

Bodhi Linux version numbers follow the x.y.z format with x representing the major release version, y for scheduled update releases and z for the emergency bug fix releases.
