Qualcomm Could Announce Its First ‘Gaming Smartphone’ This Year

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon event is fast approaching and so are the preliminary reports surrounding it. One such report about a gaming smartphone, in particular, has attracted the attention of mobile gamers.

According to DigiTimes, Qualcomm is preparing to announce its first-ever gaming smartphone at the Snapdragon event scheduled for December 1-2. The chipset-maker will enter the gaming smartphone sector with assistance from industry experts ASUS.

Let alone gaming smartphones, Qualcomm has never made a basic smartphone. It excels in making chips that smartphones run on, but that’s mainly it. So, this new venture into the gaming smartphone industry is undoubtedly a bold move.

However, Qualcomm’s inexperience in manufacturing gaming phones is compensated for, through its collaboration with ASUS. The latter is a well-known name in the gaming industry and has been manufacturing gaming phones like ROG 3 for years.

In fact, GSMArena speculates that the new Qualcomm gaming smartphone could even be released under ASUS’s “Republic Of Gamers” (ROG) moniker. The ROG is a lineup of smartphone and laptop devices that is specially curated for gamers.

Following Nvidia’s acquisition of ARM and its impending entry into mobile tech, the Qualcomm-ASUS partnership emerges as an interesting competitor. Nvidia will certainly compete with Qualcomm’s Adreno for mobile GPU dominance, and the latter’s allegiance with ASUS just adds another dimension to this prospective rivalry.

Although we don’t have enough details about Qualcomm’s new gadget right now, knowing the value ASUS brings to the table, it won’t be surprising if it turns out to be one of the most-awaited gaming phones announced this year.
