A Delhi Man Stands Between Sony And PS5’s India Release

As if Sony being mum on PS5’s India release date wasn’t enough, now the console giant also faces a legal battle for the “PS5” trademark. This is likely to postpone the next-gen console’s launch in the country, upsetting the Indian gaming community.

Owing to a bizarre incident, that would amuse everyone (especially Xbox fans) but not PS gamers, Sony will have to win a copyright scuffle before they can launch the new PlayStation in India.

Sony’s ‘PS5’ Trademark Struggle

According to The Mako Reactor, the “PS5” trademark was registered by a Delhi resident named Hitesh Aswani. The trademark was filed on October 29, 2019, about three months before Sony did the same on February 2, 2020.

As of now, the trademark claims of both parties are marked as “opposed” on India’s Trade Marks website. Despite this, the source reports that Sony is more than likely to secure the rights to the “PS5” name in the end.

Not long back, ASUS faced a similar issue while launching their “Zenfone” lineup in India. The rights to the name were already owned by Indian phone-maker Zen. So ASUS had to release the Zenfone under a different name ‘ASUS 6z’ in India.

However, this scenario involves an individual and not a registered company, so Sony is expected to win the claim.

Sony PS5 Launch In India: Everything We Know

PS5 is available for pre-order and is set to release on November 12 in most parts of the world. But, the Japanese company has not yet shared a word about the console’s release in India.

Not just the release date, there has been no update from Sony regarding the price either. However, it has been suggested that the next-gen PlayStation will cost about Rs 55,000 in India.

Moreover, reports suggest that Sony may ditch the PS5 Digital Edition in India due to poor demand for the discless variant.

With India already down on Sony’s list, the latest hurdle only worsens the case for Indian gamers. If you’re eagerly waiting for an announcement from Sony India, you might have to wait for a significantly long time.
