The 12th Annual Conference for Open Source Coders, Users and Promoters, COSCUP, will take place at the Taipei College of Social Sciences, National Taiwan University. The event that will take place on August 5th and 6th will bring in both international and local open source speakers together.
COSCUP is an annual conference organized by the Open Source Community in Taiwan. It started in 2006 and has as major aim the advocacy of Free software movement in Taiwan – that is to provide a platform where Open Source promoters, users and coders connect as well as the promotion of Free, Libre and open-source software (FLOSS).
According to organizers, this conference is organized for programmers, end-users and open source promoters. “It is a common fact that the coders of traditional commercial software rarely interact with users,” they said on their website. This is, therefore, a medium where coders meet with users as well as open source sales and customer service personnel.
The event will receive people from different walks of life – farmers, architects, anthropologists to cabinet ministers. COSCUP usually attracts techies from all over Asia. This year’s event will have a wide range of topics to be discussed. Topics like Open Farm Innovation, Civil Tech, DevOps, Open Web Technologies and community building. There are also going to be workshops on WordPress, Linux Kernel, System and Coders, Ethereum (Blockchain), Kaggle 101 – Data Science on-the-go and many others.
Some notable speakers at the event include Ko Wen-je, Taipei Mayor and Simon Chang, Executive Director of Taiwan Mobile Foundation who will share their views about open source in the opening ceremony. Other notable speakers include Italo Vignoli – founder of Document Foundation, Alex Crichton and Brian Anderson of the Rust Core Team and Lee Wei-bin of the Taipei Department of IT.
The two-day registration-free event will be attended by over 2000 people including speakers and staff from 16 different countries with support from the Open Culture Foundation (OCF), an organization by local community volunteers.
